SECTION 15 - CREATE YOUR OWN WORKSPACE

Student Goal:

Continuing on from the previous project of conducting research for your chosen career path, this assignment will help you understand what materials and work areas you will need to effectively to do your job. It's important to understand that the more knowledge you will have about your field, the more prepared and successful you will be in getting started after you complete your education. This project will give you a sample template of an empty studio area and you will fill it with all of the necessary equipment (furniture, hardware, software, etc.) to do your job.

PART ONE - RESEARCH EQUIPMENT AND SPACE

Take the Career Field that you did your research project at the beginning of the year and build a workspace to do that job. In the previous project, you learned the type of environment that you will work in, the type of equipment, and the cost to create the space. This project will be based on you renting a studio space and designing your work area. Here are the specifications you need to follow:

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Your budget for space with everything in it will be $25,000 assuming you applied for and received a small business loan to create your space. You will have to submit a proposal to the bank showing what you will be using the money for. You do not need to use all the money, but you cannot exceed the loan amount.

  2. Fill out and submit a Small Business Loan Proposal that you will submit to the bank asking for the funds to start your business. Here are the topics for the 3 paragraphs:

    1. Who are you and what is your business (sound, video, graphic design, etc)?

    2. What equipment do you need and why?

    3. How much do you expect to make in your first year and what will you do to market your business to meet that goal?

    4. Submit your completed proposal to Schoology

  3. Brainstorming Ideas. Begin to watch the lecture videos that show examples of what Photo, Video, and Sound Studios look like. Here are some questions to think about when you begin to plan out your studio space:

    1. What size is the space? large? Small?

    2. Are there multiple rooms and what are those rooms used for?

    3. Do you need a studio/sound area or a meeting room? a changing room? Search the Internet for current studio owners' studio spaces for inspiration.

    4. What equipment do you see being used in these spaces?

    5. What furniture and decorations do you think you will need?

Use the document titled "SMALL BIZ PROPOSAL" located in Resources. When completed, submit it to Schoology

PART TWO - SUBMIT EQUIPMENT AND MATERIAL LIST

Create a list of what you observed and start to write up a list of supplies and specifications for your studio space and keep it handy when you go to begin your Floor Plan.

  1. Using websites like IKEA, Amazon, Sweetwater, Adorama, and B&H Photo, search for your equipment and software.

  2. Do some price comparisons for the best price.

  3. Insert links and prices into your form

  4. Submit your list to the instructor Via Schoology.

Depending on your career path, here are some items to consider when making your purchases:

Video Editing Studio - desk area (sitting/standing) equipment and storage areas, client furniture, viewing area

Video or Photo Studio - cameras, lenses, memory cards, backdrops, green screens, tripods, lighting kits (strobes and LED lighting with stands), changing or staging area, racks, and cases to store equipment. Think about your desk/work area and furniture for clients

Music Studio - quiet/recording rooms, sound recording console, equipment storage area, client seating area, instrument storage, computer workstation, sound playback area

Use the document titled "BIZ EQUIPMENT LIST" located in Resources. When completed, submit it to Schoology

PART THREE - CREATE YOUR FLOORPLAN

Begin to design your space using Vector based software. In this case, we will be using Adobe Illustrator to create your Floor Plan.

Add colors, add finishing touches and refinements, and create a symbol "Legend". See the examples on the right

The space for your work area is:

  • 17" (INCHES) Interior Width

  • 21.3”(INCHES) Interior Length

  • 9" Ceiling Height (You do not need to include this measurement as we are not working in 3D)

Your Floor Plan Blueprint MUST include:

  1. Create an Adobe Illustrator file 26"X 20" (INCHES) to create your floor plan. This will give you some extra space on the side to put your "Legend" describing what your shapes and symbols are.

  2. Entrances and exits

  3. Walls, dividers, windows, etc.

  4. Furniture (Desks, couches, tables, chairs, etc.)

  5. Equipment (computers, instruments, video, camera equipment, speakers, etc.)

  6. Additional spaces (bathroom, studio area, equipment room, sound room conference area, etc.)

  7. Make sure to use colors for these items and label them with text so we know what they are

  8. Add colors, add finishing touches and refinements, and create a symbol "Legend"

  9. Export as a JPEG and upload to Schoology when finished.
