SECTION 14 - INTRO TO ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR
Student Goal:
Concept and design are a critical part of the design world, whether it is an illustration for a children’s book or an advertisement. Students tend to oversee the potential for this kind of thinking and development. Good habits in creative development are key to success. The goal of this assignment is to create a series of tasks in Adobe Illustrator that utilize the benefits of Vector based artwork
PART ONE - ILLUSTRATOR BASICS
INSTRUCTIONS

For this assignment, follow and complete the tutorials created by Adobe for beginners that are just introducing themselves to Illustrator. You will learn:

How to create and edit shapes

Transform and edit artwork

Change color and strokes
-
Add text to your designs

These design tutorials will help you prepare for the next project of creating your own business logo and design graphics.

PART TWO - CREATE YOUR BUSINESS LOGO
CREATE YOUR BRAND LOGO
With the experience you've gained from the previous project, you're going to create your own logo to promote yourself and your "brand". Logos are a great way to be remembered in business and also a good way to make some income designing for others.

INSTRUCTIONS

Download the logo design template to the right to help you develop your logo

Develop 5 different logo ideas including changing the name

Do 4 sketches of each idea

Sketches are to be done in black and white only. No colors
-
Take a picture with your phone and upload the finished template to Schoology
-
Once you and the instructor go over the sheet, the best design will be used to create your logo in Illustrator
-
Create a new document in Illustrator sized 8.5"X11"

Take your sketched logo design and convert it into Vector art
-
Create 1 version in black and white and the OTHER IN COLOR. Please see the example on the right.

Submit your design to Schoology.

PART THREE - DESIGN YOUR STOREFRONT
CREATE A CITYSCAPE WITH YOUR STOREFRONT
A great way to learn how to use basic shapes is by designing a cityscape. It can be designed after an existing cityscape that exists in reality or create your own. Your finished logo will be used to create a sign for your business, which needs to be part of your cityscape. Here are some ideas to consider

Is it based on a real cityscape? make sure you search for a good-quality image you can work from.

Your business logo needs to be made into a sign to place on your storefront.

Where will your store be located?
-
in a town, city, beach, etc.​

What other types of buildings are next to your business and nearby?

Don't forget to add features like cars, bridges, clouds, water, boats, planes, etc.
INSTRUCTIONS​

Complete a Cityscape design that has at least 5 buildings​
-
Needs a Sky or water feature with related items (boats, fish sun, moon, clouds, birds, etc.)
-
Signage (billboard, your store sign, airplane banner)
-
Windows, doors, street, roof, etc.
-
The final size of your project is 11" x 17" @ 150dpi
-
Export your file from Illustrator as a JPEG formatted file.
-
Upload your project to Schoology and your Graphic Design page area on your portfolio site.
EXTRA TIME
-
Find a high-resolution image of a storefront/building that most represent what you want your business to look like and create a sign with your logo on it.
FINISHED STUDENT EXAMPLES
Student Objective:
After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will develop a personal logo for their website to promote themselves. You will also create a self-portrait that you will illustrate that can be used on your portfolio website

This project will give you an in-depth tutorial on the basics of Illustrator. You will learn how to work with, fonts, shapes, colors, and layout. This program will be used for a variety of tasks that can include custom logos, original artwork, typeface design, and package design
