SECTION 1 - CLASS INTERVIEWS

 

Student Goal:

In our industry, one of our most important skills is the ability to communicate ideas as well with others such as clients or co-workers. Some of us have the natural ability to work well and communicate with others, but others are shy and anxious and need to develop their skills. This assignment will introduce you to other students in class and also start you on your journey of learning how to present and communicate effectively.

To develop better communication and team-building skills, while also getting to know your classmates.​

SECTION 2 - CAREER EXPLORATION & RESEARCH

 

Student Goal:
Oftentimes, the first question that someone will ask is: “What do you do?” In our society, our careers are commonly linked to our identities. According to Dr. Sigmund Freud, “Success in work and love is the hallmark of mental health.”

 

There are many factors involved in the evolution of our careers, including, but not limited to: identifying our personal interests, conducting research to gain career information, making sound career decisions, and actually obtaining a job. This is a career guidance project, consisting of activities that are designed to assist students in discovering themselves and possible course-related careers.

 

Student Objective:

​To understand course-related careers and how they can be attained by learning about the activities, tasks, and education needed. You will also learn the secondary skills needed for your career choice like interpersonal and communication skills, etc.

SECTION 2 - CAREER EXPLORATION PROJECT

 

OVERVIEW

SECTION 3 - INTRO TO MUSIC

​

Student Goal:

For your first music project, we will be making a series of "Mash-Ups". A mashup is a music track created by blending elements of two different songs to create a new song. For example, a producer or DJ creates a mashup by taking the instrumental track from one song and the vocal track from another to create a new track, reworking the song in different keys and tempos as needed.

​

Student Objective:

For this section, you are going to start off by learning your way around Apple Garageband. For our first exercise, we are going to take 2 songs of our own choosing and mash them together. This will help us to get used to the look and feel of Garageband while also getting some experience trimming and combining files. Watch the tutorials below to gain a basic understanding of importing files into Garageband and the control panel layout.​

SECTION 4 - INTRO TO VIDEO EDITING

Student Goal:

Today. the preferred way to present your idea to the masses is by the use of video and sound. This method used to be expensive and involved a variety of sound and audio professionals, but with advancements in technology and software, most people with the ambition (and time) can learn basic video and sound editing at a fraction of the cost. An important part of working in the field of Multimedia Communications is being able to present your work in a digital format to appeal to a wide audience. This assignment will walk you through the process of creating a video, editing, and adding sound, which will then be exported for viewing.

​

Student Objective:

After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will learn how to use Apple iMovie to create and edit video footage. Exercises will include importing video and sound, removing a green screen, working with titles and transitions, and exporting to various formats

​

SECTION 5 - INTRO TO ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

 

Student Goal:

Abode Photoshop has long been considered the industry-standard image editing program and is an essential tool for every designer's toolkit. From photography to graphic, video, and web design, photoshop has an endless amount of practical uses to create and promote any image you bring into it.

​

Student Objective:

​To understand and demonstrate the ability to use Adobe Photoshop by creating edited images for use in marketing materials.​

​

Lesson/Project Overview:

This project will give you an in-depth tutorial on creating an image file in Photoshop and the many imaging formats you can save it as. You will also learn the basic corrections used like levels, white and color balance, and selecting and creating layers.

​

SECTION 6 - PHOTOSHOP SURREAL PORTRAIT

 

Student Goal:

Whether working in Video, Photography, or Graphic Design, having skills in Adobe Photoshop is a must-have in your digital toolbox. Adobe Photoshop is the industry-standard image editing app and can also create animations and add effects to video and graphic art pieces. This project will introduce students to the basics of this program and how to create artwork with it.

​

Student Objective:

After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will develop a poster on the theme of the art movement of Surrealism which began in the 1920s and was made famous by artists like Salvador Dali

​

Lesson/Project Overview:

This project will give you an in-depth tutorial on creating an image file in Photoshop and the many imaging formats you can save it as. You will also learn the basic corrections used like levels, white and color balance, selecting and creating layers, and filter effects using the filter gallery

SECTION 7 - S.M.A.R.T. GOALS

 

Student Goal:

Did you know there is a simple process that can dramatically increase the efficiency of our daily lives? With this tool, we can optimize our time, increase productivity, and make the most out of our days. What is it you ask? Goal setting. That’s right, this elementary skill is so useful in leading a successful life, yet often overlooked due to familiarity. Since people become too familiar with the idea of goal setting, they often forget its main purpose.

​

Student Objective:

After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will develop a long-term goal (6-12 months) using the S.M.A.R.T. template and then create a 2-minute video explaining their goal

​

Lesson/Project Overview:

Goal setting is a strategy you will apply for the rest of your life. When we set our goals, we want to be very clear about them so that we have the best chance to achieve them. The key to remember is that goals come in all shapes and sizes. Just because it doesn’t work for someone else doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve it. Your kids will learn from both their achievements and setbacks, but as they begin to set personal goals, they will learn and grow in ways that you did not think possible.

SECTION 8 - WIX STUDENT PORTFOLIO WEBSITE

Overview

Having your own website is the modern-day equivalent of having your business card, resume, and portfolio all wrapped up into one. Web design used to be a very complicated process, but with advancements in software and technology, all you need is an entry-level laptop and a web browser to build it. Your site will give you the ability to get into the post-secondary schools of your choosing while also giving you the ability to network yourself and even get some freelance work.

To learn and understand the basics of web development and design principles.​

SECTION 9- FOLEY ARTIST

​

Student Goal:

A common career in the audio production industry is creating and incorporating sound effects into existing videos to make them seem more realistic and interesting. This type of job is called a Foley Artist - Virtually every movie you've ever seen uses sound effects created by a Foley Artist. ​

​

Student Objective:

In this project, you will become a Foley Artist as you add your own real-life sound effects to an existing video clip. The goal of the sound effects is to make the video more realistic and entertaining - reaching more of the viewers' senses and capturing the audience more effectively. The video will need to be 2 minutes long and have sound effects made by you and from the Internet.

SECTION 10 - PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

​

Student Goal:

Basic photography skills are so important in today’s digital design world. Whether it's a photo for a website or a product shot for an advertisement. Photography is a must-have skill in today's design world. Students will be introduced to the concepts of SLR camera operations and the use of composition and lighting in Photography. 

​

Student Objective:

After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will understand the different types of lighting setups for portraiture as well as how to work with and pose models. Adobe Photoshop will also be used to create Contact Sheets for image viewing and selection and have the ability to crop, color correct, and retouch their images to a high level of quality.

​

Lesson/Project Overview:

This project will expose you to the fundamentals of Photography. You will learn how to work with cameras, studio lighting, accessories like tripods and light panels, and the use of post-processing image editing software.

SECTION 11 - WORLD TOUR PROMO VIDEO

Student Goal

Coming soon is the biggest most exciting concert of the summer! Get ready for their 15-country world tour! These are taglines often associated with the rollout of a well-known artist or band announcement for a world tour. A lot of time effort and money goes into these events and one of the most used methods of promoting them is a promotional video. 

​

Student Objective

Students will conduct the necessary research to meet the requirements of creating an industry-standard promotional video for the music industry

​​

​Lesson/Project Overview

For this assignment, you will do a 90-second promotional video for 2 artists or bands that are teaming up for a world tour next year using what you've learned from using Adobe Photoshop and iMovie to create your project.​

​

SECTION 12 - SOUND - VOICE OVER ADS

Student Goal:

Music is more popular than ever with its accessibility on such a wide variety of devices as phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth speakers, and car stereos. Also, with the creation and popularity of Podcasts and streaming, there are a variety of jobs in the sound creation and editing field.

​

Student Objective:

After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will develop sound effects and loops for sound effects (Foley) video clips. Students will also learn how to record their voices into tracks import them into software and integrate them with sound and video.

​

Lesson/Project Overview:

This project will give you an in-depth tutorial on the basics of editing sound with programs like Garageband, Audition, and FL Studio. You will learn how to work with using sound effects, creating original tracks, and editing existing content on the Internet, and how to combine both sound effects and music into a complete project.

SECTION 13 - RECORD STORE DAY PROMO - ALBUM DESIGN​

 PROMO - ALBStudent Objective:

After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will develop a complete design package for the album along with a promotional video to promote the album to be sold on National Record Store Day. Billboards, t-shirts, and poster designs will also accompany the promotional materials.

​

Lesson/Project Overview Here:

After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will develop a complete design package that consists of an Album front and back cover, inner, sleeve, and record label. If time allows students will have the opportunity to create a 60-second promotional radio spot with a voice-over recording and original music from the artist. The use of titles and music will also be used for the video. Music can be pulled from the Internet and mixed together to create an album song list

After completion of the lecture and the class exercises, the students will develop a personal logo for their website to promote themselves. You will also create a self-portrait that you will illustrate that can be used on your portfolio website

Lesson/Project Overview:

This project will give you an in-depth tutorial on the basics of Illustrator. You will learn how to work with, fonts, shapes, colors, and layout. This program will be used for a variety of tasks that can include custom logos, original artwork, typeface design, and package design

SECTION 15 - CREATE YOUR OWN WORKSPACE

 

Student Objective:

Continuing on from the previous project of conducting research for your chosen career path, this assignment will help you understand what materials and work areas you will need to effectively to do your job. It's important to understand that the more knowledge you will have about your field, the more prepared and successful you will be in getting started after you complete your education. This project will give you a sample template of an empty studio area and you will fill it with all of the necessary equipment (furniture, hardware, software, etc.) to do your job.

​

Lesson/Project Overview:

Take the Career Field that you did your research project at the beginning of the year and build a workspace to do that job. In the previous project, you learned the type of environment that you will work in, the type of equipment, and the cost to create the space. This project will be based on you renting a studio space and designing your work area. Here are the specifications you need to follow:
